Tikal Petén RACHEL Digital Library Project
In cooperation with the Rotary Club of Tikal Petén Guatemala, the project will provide 30-40 schools over three years in Petén (NE Guatemala) with a RACHEL system plus laptops (Chromebooks) to effectively add a reference library, a full repertoire of Guatemala’s textbooks, and computer aided learning applications at a cost of $2,750 (US) per school.
The major elements of the project are:
• Providing one RACHEL system to each school. ($US 500 each)
• Providing an average of 10 Chromebook laptops to each school, to be used for the learning applications that are made available on the RACHEL systems. Chromebooks are very simple, inexpensive laptops that can only be used either on-line or in conjunction with a RACHEL server.
• Provide extensive training to the teachers in the recipient schools.
A similar project has successfully been carried out in the Barillas municipality of NW Guatemala, making a huge difference in the lives of thousands of children.
A RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspots for Education and Learning) is a small, inexpensive computer server that, through the use of a Wi-Fi hotspot that it generates, provides access to thousands of electronic books (textbooks, reference books, classics and other reading material), Wikipedia, medical encyclopedias, plus educational games, videos and other applications, to students equipped with a laptop, tablet or smartphone. The Spanish version has been created with the cooperation of the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and so contains a large number of Guatemalan text books and other Guatemalan educational material.
